Brendan Smith T.D.

It has been my great privilege to represent the people of Cavan and Monaghan in Dáil Éireann since 1992. I have at all times worked diligently to repay the great faith shown in me over five general elections.

The fruits of Fianna Fáil in Government since 1997 are evident right across this constituency, with both counties benefiting from unprecedented levels of state investment which has greatly improved infrastructure and services in particular.

In recent years, significant investment has delivered new roads, water and sewerage schemes, local authority housing, schools, health facilities, sport and recreation facilities, a range of community support programmes, childcare and broadband. The impact of this unprecedented level of investment has impacted positively on all parts of Cavan and Monaghan.

We face many challenges especially the need to steer our country back to the levels of progress enjoyed in the period 1997 - 2008. I am determined along with my fellow Fianna Fáil public representatives, to work to ensure that this constituency continues to benefit from the maximum possible investment. We need new job opportunities and we also need to support businesses to maintain existing employment.

Along with my Party colleagues, I look forward to carrying on my work on your behalf and I pledge in particular to do my utmost to ensure that even better services and crucially, job opportunities are created for the people of this constituency. As a Party we will work hard to represent to the best of our ability the interests of individuals and of local communities throughout Cavan/Monaghan.

Smith calls for a Yes vote on the Stability Treaty referendum

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan Monaghan, Brendan Smith, has called on the people of both counties to Vote yes in the upcoming stability treaty.

Deputy Smith commented: “There are 13,860 people unemployed in Cavan and Monaghan. I will be honest and say that the treaty will not cure all our economic woes but it will definitely allow Cavan, Monaghan and Ireland to have a more secure foundation for our future.

Quarter of State exam Superintendents posts filled by retired teachers – Smith

Nearly one quarter of the superintendents hired by the State Examination Commission to supervise the Junior and Leaving Certificate Exams last year were retired teachers, according to new figures obtained by Fianna Fáil’s Education Spokesperson Brendan Smith.

Deputy Smith tabled a series of Parliamentary Questions to the Minister for Education and Skills and the State Examinations confirmed to him that 1,147 retired teachers were appointed as exam Superintendents last year, out of a total 4,735. In addition to this 393 retired teachers were employed to correct exam papers out of a total of 5,168 and 192 retired teachers were hired as Leaving Certificate Oral Examiners out of a total of 1100.

Commenting on the figures, Deputy Smith said, “It is unacceptable that at a time when thousands of qualified teachers are looking for jobs, at least 1,732 jobs were handed over to retired teachers last Summer. These may be temporary positions, but they provide a real opportunity to offer newly qualified teachers a salary and valuable work experience while they continue to search for a permanent teaching position.
