Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Brendan Smith has again called on the HSE to provide Translarna as a part of the drug reimbursement scheme.
Deputy Smith commented “There is an ongoing process which has left patients anxiously awaiting the outcome of the HSE decision on this medication. At present the drug is under consideration with the HSE.
“Young children have shown significant progress when taking this drug as a part of treatment for muscular dystrophy. Translarna is available in Northern Ireland and in other European countries. It keeps children active for longer and slows the progression of the disease.
“In the reply to my most recent parliamentary question I understand that senior management within the HSE have discussed this matter at their January meeting and a decision is pending. I would urge the officials within the HSE and the Minister to give strong consideration to this life changing medication,” concluded Deputy Brendan Smith.
