Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Brendan Smith, says that the plans for a personal injury claims database would go some way to curtail fraudulent insurance claims and may reduce soaring insurance premiums.

The Cavan-Monaghan TD has expressed his disappointment that this register will not be established.

 Deputy Smith commented, “It is concerning that the register has not been set up. This is another massive set back in efforts to address soaring insurance costs.

 “I am aware the insurance market has their own database. I would hold concerns that such a register is operated by insurance providers. An industry owned register does not seem appropriate.

“Rising insurance costs are a major concern among businesses, as well as community and voluntary groups. This year has seen the closure of many businesses and ending of many community events.

“The Cost of Insurance Working Group was formed in 2016. Three years on changes have been slow to come around. A true reflection of this is that fact insurance costs are still rising. Like many crises, the government seem to be doing very little to resolve the problems.  

“I would urge the Taoiseach and his government to step up their efforts to tackle insurance costs. Otherwise business closures and the ending of voluntary community groups will become the norm,” concluded Deputy Smith.
