Brendan Smith: Immediate action needed to address ‘unacceptable’ Cavan and Monaghan hearing assessment and fitting service delays

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan and Monaghan, Brendan Smith has called for immediate action to address the unacceptable delays for people in Cavan and Monaghan seeking hearing aid assessments and fittings.

Following a Dáil question to the Minister for Health, Deputy Brendan Smith stated: “Additional resources need to be provided urgently to cut this unacceptable waiting list. I understand that services have been impacted by the pandemic, but these people have been waiting far too long and the Department of Health and HSE need to assign the necessary resources now so these people can try and get the service and help they require.”

In response to the Cavan and Monaghan Deputy’s question, the HSE stated: “The Audiology Service was impacted by the Covid-19 Pandemic which led to increased waiting times for Audiology appointments.

“Audiology appointment times are in line with the national standardised times for Audiology clinics and staff are working at full capacity. The Audiology Service has been given funding through the National Audiology program, for a two year Specified Purpose Contract for a Staff Grade Audiologist.

“Once this post is filled, the new staff member will work across the Cavan/Monaghan/Louth area to target the longest waiting lists,” the response added.
