Statement by Brendan Smith TD
Co-Chair British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly

At this week’s meeting of the British–Irish Parliamentary Assembly I raised directly with the Minister of State for Northern Ireland Steve Baker MP the need for the British government to give access to an independent, eminent, international legal person access to all papers and files pertaining to the Dublin/Monaghan bombings of 17th May 1974.
Unanimous motions were passed by Dáil Éireann in 2008, 2011 and 2016 requesting such access and I emphasised again to British government representatives that it is essential that proper and full investigations are carried out into such atrocities as the Dublin/Monaghan bombings and the least the victims and families of victims deserve is the truth in relation to who carried out such murders.
