Smith “heartened” by commitment to proposed Cavan Regional Sports Centre

Local Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith has said he is “heartened” by the Government’s commitment to the proposed new regional sports campus in Cavan.

Speaking in the Dáil Deputy Smith said he was anxious that further funding be approved as soon as possible for the centre located to the southwest of Cavan town.

In response, Minister for Sport Thomas Byrne TD told his party colleague that he is “very committed” to the project.

“I do hope to be in a position in due course to announce further funding…to get these projects off the ground,” Minister Byrne said.

Deputy Smith described Minister Byrne’s remarks as an “important signal” as the Cavan Regional Sports Complex has advanced significantly since the original decision in 2020 to award funding.

“While the Covid pandemic and the inflation in construction costs have caused problems for projects across the country, it is vital that the Regional Sports Complex in Cavan Town is progressed as quickly as possible,” Deputy Smith said.

“The sports complex, adjoining Breffni Park, will complement the excellent facilities there and will be a huge asset, offering facilities for a range of sports. It would also enable Cavan to host major events and drive business in the wider region.”

He added: “I will continue to strongly support the commendable work of the project promoters and all sporting organisations committed to the development of this multi-sports complex.  I welcome Minister Byrne’s strong commitment to the development of both small and large scale sporting facilities throughout the country.”
