Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil T.D. Brendan Smith has welcomed the decision of the Department of Education to appoint the Cavan/Monaghan Education and Training Board as the patron of the proposed new second level school in Kingscourt.

Deputy Smith stated that the then Minister for Education, Batt O’Keeffe in March 2009 sanctioned the approval of a second level school for 500 pupils in Kingscourt and that was the key decision. He added that in the meantime Co. Cavan VEC were able to undertake substantial and detailed preparatory work on this project.

Deputy Brendan Smith stated that Clifford Kelly as Chairman of the V.E.C. had led the constant and successful campaign which resulted in the Ministerial decision in 2009 to approve the provision of a new school. He added that appointing the Cavan Monaghan Education and Training Board was an obvious decision as Co. Cavan VEC did all the preparatory work in respect of this project. He stated that the then Chairman Clifford Kelly and the VEC following submission of a detailed application continually highlighted the need for such an educational facility in Kingscourt.

Deputy Smith complimented Martin O’Brien, CEO and his Officials on their excellent work to date in advancing this project. He added that their commitment and diligence in progressing the project is evidence of their commitment to second level education in the Kingscourt area.
