Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil T.D. Brendan Smith has been informed by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald T.D. that following consultation between Garda management and the OPW, a site has been identified for the new Garda Station in Bailieborough and the Office of Public Works advises that it is progressing the legal matters relating to the acquisition of the site.
The Justice Minister was replying to the most recent Parliamentary Question tabled by Brendan Smith in Dáil Éireann regarding the need to progress this proposed building project and he had asked when the project would proceed to the next stage, when the tendering process would commence, the timescale for construction and the overall cost.
Minister Fitzgerald stated – “The Office of Public Works (OPW) has the primary responsibility for the provision and maintenance of Garda accommodation and works closely with the Garda authorities in this regard.
The Deputy will be aware that the Garda Building and Refurbishment Programme 2016-2021 includes the development of a new Garda station at the District Headquarters of Bailieboro, Co Cavan.
I am happy to inform the Deputy that, following consultation between Garda management and the OPW, a site has been identified for the new Garda Station and the OPW advises that it is progressing the legal matters relating to the acquisition of the site.
Until the site acquisition is completed, it is not possible to provide an exact timeline and details on procurement, construction and costing of the new station”, concluded Minister Fitzgerald in her reply in Dáil Éireann.
Brendan Smith said that he has asked the Minister and the Office of Public Works to advance this project as quickly as possible as there is a need to ensure that the Divisional Headquarters has adequate and modern accommodation.
