I have been in contact with the Minister for Health and also with the Group CEO of the RCSI Hospital Group in relation to the proposal to merge the Midwifery Led Unit with Consultant Led Maternity Services in Cavan General Hospital.

I outlined to Minister Harris and to Mr Carter the widespread concerns of constituents in Cavan/Monaghan, also families in adjoining areas and those of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation in relation to this proposal. This proposal runs counter to the National Maternity Strategy which recommends the expansion of midwife led units.

I asked the Minister and the RCSI Hospital Group CEO to give a clear commitment that there would be diminution in Maternity Services at Cavan General Hospital.
