Deputy Smith welcomes plans for emergency alerts to be sent directly to mobile phones

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Brendan Smith, has welcomed the decision to develop a national mobile alert system that will send warnings to people in areas affected by severe weather, major accidents and other emergencies.

The alerts will appear automatically on mobile phones in the affected area, helping people get important information quickly when an emergency happens.

Deputy Smith said the move would be particularly important for rural communities across Cavan and Monaghan.

“We have seen in recent years how quickly severe weather can disrupt communities, damage property, and leave people without power or services.

“This new system will make sure people receive warnings and advice directly on their phones when an emergency occurs. That could be especially important during storms, flooding or other major incidents,” he said.

The alerts will be sent using a technology known as cell broadcasting, which allows messages to reach all compatible mobile phones in a specific area at the same time.

Unlike text messages, the alerts can still be delivered even when mobile networks are busy.

Deputy Smith said the new system would help people stay safe and make informed decisions during emergencies.

“People need clear information when emergency happens. This system will help make sure families, businesses, farmers, and local communities across Cavan and Monaghan can get that information as quickly as possible.”

The project is expected to go out to tender next year, with the new alert system due to be rolled out in 2027.

Deputy Smith said it would be a valuable addition to Ireland’s emergency response systems.

“Anything that helps protect people and keeps communities informed during emergencies is a positive step. I welcome this decision and look forward to seeing the system put in place.”
